Congratulations for applying your passport. Your passport must be mostly confirmed by now and that is the reason you are eagerly looking to track your passport dispatch status. If you are confused about the passport dispatch mode, here is the answer. Your passport will be safely dispatched via Speed Post, a service of the India Post. It is quite important to keep an eye on your passport dispatch status. Once the passport is dispatched, you must track your passport using the tracking number given in the Speed Post Tracking utility by India Post. 



How to check your passport dispatch status online?


Step 1 - Visit http://passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/statusTracker/trackStatusInpNew.

Step 2 - Select the application type. 

Available application type options are below:

  1. Passport/PCC/IC
  2. RTI
  3. Diplomatic/Artificial application
  4. Surrender Certificate

Step 3 - Enter File number. The correct file number can be found on the top right corner of the acknowledgement letter. File number contains 15 digit alphanumeric letters.

The Acknowledgement letter must be given to you by Passport Seva Kendra office once you submit your passport application successfully.

Step 4 - Select the Date of Birth by clicking the small calendar icon next to the text field.

Step 5 - Click on the button 'Track Status'.

If the passport status is shown as Dispatched, it must have been dispatched by the Regional Passport office to the address given by you in the passport application form.

Once it is dispatched, you can track your passport delivery status through Speed post tracking utility in the link - https://www.indiapost.gov.in/VAS/Pages/trackconsignment.aspx.


To what address my passport will be dispatched?

You must have given your address in the passport application form. Your passport will be dispatched to the same address whatever you have given in your application form. That is, the address of the applicant given in the passport application form.

The status will be shown as Passport XXXXX has been dispatched on DD/MM/YYYY via Speed Post Tracking Number xxxxxxxx.

What if I receive a wrong passport?

Each and every effort will be taken by Passport office to dispatch the correct passport. In case of discrepancies, you have to surrender the wrong passport to the Regional Passport Office.

What if my address has changed after submitting the application but before the passport is dispatched?

You have to submit an application to the Regional Passport office with proof of your present address and other proofs if they require any. After validating your application, the passport will be dispatched to the new address if everything is correct.


What if my address has changed after the passport is dispatched?

You cannot update the address of passport after the status is changed to dispatched. The speed post authorities might try to deliver your passport at the address given by you in the application form. Once they find out that you are not available in that address, they will return your passport to the Regional Passport office. 

You have to submit an application to the Regional Passport office with proof of your present address and other proofs if they require any. After validating your application, the passport will be dispatched again.


What if I cannot be available at home to collect my passport?

Try to make sure that you are available at your home while your passport is getting delivered. In case of unavoidable situation, ask your family member to have a valid id proof including your id proof. The postman's decision is final after checking the id proofs. If he is not satisfied, he might return the passport.


Should I wait for the passport to get dispatched through Speed post or can I go and collect directly from the Regional Passport Office?

Mostly, passport will be dispatched through India Post. However, urgent situations will be considered by Regional Passport officer if you have a real valid reason for seeking the passport directly from the Regional Passport office. 

In case of urgency, you can get the passport directly from your concerned Regional Passport Office as it will take few days to reach you at your address you have given in your passport application form.

To get your passport directly from the Regional Passport Office, you have to submit an application to the respective Regional Passport Office with the reason for urgency. The Regional Passport officer will validate your application and he might approve or reject your request.

If your request for getting the passport directly from the Regional Passport Office is approved, you can directly collect the passport from the counter in Regional Passport Office.

The status of the Passport is 'Dispatched' for a long time. But I have not yet received the passport. What to do?

Once the status of your passport is shown as dispatched, it means that your passport has been sent via the Speed post facility of India Post.  

Just check the status of your passport in the Speed Post tracking facility of India Post. Just check the respective Speed post center and enquire about your passport. Do not forget to take the tracking number. Tell them the status of the passport in Speed Post Tracking Utility. Check whether it is correct. They might be able to help with you in delivering your passport if it is pending for delivery. In case, the passport is returned to the Regional Passport Office if they are unable to locate your address or unable to deliver it to you for any reason. In that case, you have to seek help from Regional Passport office to which the passport is returned by the Speed Post authorities.
